What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a procedure involving the application of tooth-colored composite resin. This resin is shaped, shaded, and crafted to match your adjacent teeth. Dental bonding (a.k.a. tooth bonding) is typically used to fix small flaws in your teeth, such as chips and cracks, misshapen teeth, and small gaps between your teeth. Dental bonding is non-invasive procedure because it often requires no reduction or preparation of the teeth.

At Delaware Dental Studio, we offer dental bonding to patients in Wilmington, both as a standalone procedure or as part of a smile makeover. Dr. Lynn Fee is an expert at dental bonding and has extensive experience restoring damaged teeth and making aesthetic improvements by using this procedure.

How Long Does Dental Bonding Take?

At Delaware Dental Studio, dental bonding is one of the more affordable and fastest cosmetic dental procedures available. In a single appointment that is often less than one hour, our Wilmington patients can have any of the following dental issues addressed:

  • Small chips or cracks
  • Minor gaps between teeth
  • Stains or discoloration
  • Misshapen teeth

Is Dental Bonding Right For Me?

There are multiple factors to consider when assessing whether tooth bonding may be right for you.

Advantages: Dental bonding is a quick procedure, usually performed in a single visit, and can significantly improve the appearance of your tooth. Of the cosmetic procedures available at Delaware Dental Studio, it is also the least expensive and least invasive cosmetic dental procedure. Unlike other cosmetic dental procedures, dental bonding generally does not require the removal of any tooth enamel.

Disadvantages: Dental bonding cannot be used for every cosmetic dental issue. It is not as durable and strong as other dental procedures, such as porcelain veneers and dental crowns, and consequently is more susceptible to chipping and breaking. Dental bonding also is not as stain-resistant as porcelain veneers and dental crowns. In short, dental bonding should only be used to address minor cosmetic issues.

Dental Bonding Procedure

Dental bonding is a straightforward dental procedure that usually takes approximately one hour per tooth. It does not require impressions, molds, or temporary restorations. Our Wilmington cosmetic dentist, Dr. Lynn Fee, will first prepare your tooth to receive bonding material. She will apply a gentle solution to the tooth enamel to create tiny channels or etches, which helps the bonding material adhere to the tooth.

After the tooth has been prepared. Dr. Lynn Fee will gently and carefully apply a putty-like resin material to the tooth. She will then smooth and mold the bonding material to the tooth to the desired shape and size. After the resin has been sculpted to her satisfaction, Dr. Lynn Fee will use a special ultraviolet light to seal and harden the resin. As a finishing touch, she will trim and polish the bonding material to make it translucent like natural tooth enamel.

Dental Bonding FAQs

Is Dental Bonding Painful?

At Delaware Dental Studio, our Wilmington dentists practice gentle and careful dentistry to ensure you are comfortable at all times. Of all cosmetic dental procedures, dental bonding is the least invasive, and notably, is the least painful. Our Wilmington patients and other patients in the surrounding 19810 area rarely every complain of pain during a dental bonding procedure.

How Long Will Dental Bonding Last?

Our cosmetic dentist, Dr. Lynn Fee, uses the highest quality restorative bonding material available. It is durable, natural-looking, and quite effective. With that said, however, there is no hard-and-fast time frame because it largely depends on whether you properly care for your teeth. It is not unheard for bonding to last for several decades with proper care. While dental bonding is strong and durable, it is not as strong as a dental crown or porcelain veneer.

Will Cosmetic Bonding Help If My Teeth Are Stained?

Yes, dental bonding can cover up stains on teeth. At Delaware Dental Studio, we suggest you first try a tooth whitening procedure since this an effective way to whiten your teeth with relative ease. Tooth whitening, however, may not be enough to whiten your teeth; in such a case, dental bonding is a great alternative. We can place the tooth-colored resin material on top of your stained tooth.
