What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are also often called “caps” because they cap and cover the entire chewing surface of your tooth. This protects the underlying enamel and structure from further infection and damage.

Dental crowns are mostly used when a tooth has become seriously damaged due to an accident or tooth decay, or to cover up a tooth after a root canal has been used to treat an infected tooth. However, porcelain crowns can also be used for cosmetic purposes, to cover up a stained, chipped, or misshapen tooth.

At Delaware Dental Studio, our dental crowns are expertly crafted right here in Wilmington, Delaware where they are customized and meticulously carved to fit right over your damaged tooth to instantly restore its function and form.

Why Do I Need A Crown?

There are a variety of reasons someone may need a crown. Some of these reasons include, among others:

  • Protect a decayed, worn, or cracked tooth from further damage
  • To improve both the look and function of a misshapen or discolored tooth where a veneer is not recommended
  • Anchoring a series of dental crowns to create a dental bridge
  • Protecting a tooth after a root canal
  • To be the replacement tooth secured onto a dental implant
  • Support large dental fillings when little tooth structure remains

As the foregoing list reveals, dental crowns are used for variety of purposes at our Wilmington, Delaware dental practice to treat an assortment of oral health issues.

What Are Crowns Made Of?

At Delaware Dental Studio, our Wilmington dentists use laser carved porcelain crowns because they provide an aesthetic, natural-looking restoration. In other words, they keep your smile looking and feeling natural. Porcelain crowns, which are made of dental ceramic materials, are tooth colored and have a translucence that mimics the natural enamel of your teeth. We carefully match the shade and size of our dental crowns so they fit perfectly with your other teeth while keeping a natural look.

Of course, there are other crown options available, such as stainless steel, gold, and a combination of different materials, e.g., ceramic-on-metal. Where the crown is located influences the type of material to use. Ultimately, the type of crown depends on the specific need of the affected tooth desire of the patient.

What Is A Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge uses several crowns to replace a missing tooth. Two crowns are attached to healthy “abutment” teeth, while another crown is attached to these crowns and hangs in the middle of them, replacing a missing tooth.

Bridges offer a cost-effective and comfortable alternative to partial dentures, which tend to slip and slide, and to dental implants, which can be very expensive. Using dental bridges, it’s easy to restore your smile if you’re missing one or several teeth.

How Are Crowns & Bridges Placed?

The placement process for dental crowns and bridges usually takes two appointments, and is minimally-invasive. First, you’ll come in for a consultation with Dr. Lynn Fee, and she’ll confirm that a bridge or crown is the best option for you.

Next, your mouth will be cleaned and numbed, and the tooth or teeth that are being treated will be trimmed, to remove damaged material and provide a stable platform for the crown or bridge. Then, Dr. Fee will take images of your prepared teeth, and you’ll be sent home with a temporary crown or bridge, to protect your trimmed teeth.

Then, Dr. Lynn Fee will consult with an outside dental lab, and create a dental bridge or crown that fits your surrounding teeth perfectly. You’ll come in for your second appointment in about 2-3 weeks, once your bridge or crown has arrived.

Then, your crown or bridge will be checked for the proper fit, and Dr. Lynn Fee will bond it into place permanently, using powerful dental cement. Then, it will be cleaned and polished. This completes the procedure.
